Today’s share is from my A3 sketchbook. A while ago I bought some packs of reference photos but I went on a trip and forgot about them, so had never downloaded them until today. I’m happy with my purchase.
I started this study using an Artgraf Tailor’s Shape. I haven’t picked it up for ages, so it was nice to play with something outside my usual go-tos. It’s water soluble graphite in a tailor’s chalk shape.
The original sketch was much lighter looking, but I used a gel plate and matt medium to seal it, and things went a lot darker and messy. A split-second of disappointment, but then I immediately saw a way to play further. I gave it a coat of clear gesso, then pulled out my Panpastels, another supply I don’t use often, and started playing.
There’s too much smudged artgraf around the face to rescue it, but in general I like what happened.
Lots got done today, so a satisfying studio day all around.
Til the morn,
Suzanne
