Purdah

Today’s sketchbook practice.

It’s election day here in Scotland, and also in Wales, and some parts of England are voting in local council elections, so today marks the last day of purdah.

I find it interesting the word for the pre-election period, and the tradition of political neutrality from the civil service and other bodies, is the Hindu word for secluding women from public observation, given that up until around a century ago women were very much secluded from voting.

I have an inkling that turnout will be depressingly low, although I will be ecstatic if I am wrong about that, but we probably won’t find much out until tomorrow, as our tradition of overnight counts has been changed, and counting starts at 9am tomorrow. Now that I am older, I’ll confess to being glad about that as the overnight shift of telly surfing and socials surfing for all the gossip, would likely send me out of whack for days.

Til the morn,

Suzanne
