Flocculation

Up until now I have been using the cat litter method for acrylic paint water disposal, but I did a bit more research into the flocculation method, and discovered that it can be done with aluminium sulphate and garden lime, so this week I’m experimenting with the process to see if my scoops are the right size for my medium sized bucket.

I think they might be, because flocculation, isn’t that a lovely word? flocculation started immediately. Tomorrow I will do the coffee filter part and hopefully it will all work perfectly.

It’s a very simple process:

  • Fill a receptacle with dirty paint water
  • Mix a scoop of aluminium sulphate in tap warm water
  • Pour mix into dirty paint water and stir well
  • Sprinkle a scoop of lime into the tub and stir well
  • Cover and leave for 24 hours
  • Once flocculation is complete, set up a receptacle with a funnel and coffee filters
  • Decant water through funnel and filters to fresh receptacle
  • You can now pour away the cleaned water, or use in garden
  • Allow acrylic gunk to dry out on filters, then dispose of them in household waste

Ta da.

All the other things I did today involved charcoal, or charcoal and medium, or charcoal and paint.

Today was an improvement on yesterday.

Til the morn,
