Small Wins

This weekend in Scotland we had Shetland Pride, a massive anti-fascist march in response to the racist violence this week, and the men’s football team won their first match at the men’s World Cup. I’m not sure what to do with all the good vibes.

Following on from yesterday’s oil painting practice, I switched in a different red to the palette, and chose this teensy 3×4″ oil paper block for the painting.

I was inspired to go so small after dipping into my copy of David Hockney’s Secret Knowledge book in which he theorised, to much controversy when published, that it’s impossible to eyeball and translate figures in small dimensions, and that artists like Ingres used optical devices to achieve their wee works.

I think you can work small, but I’m also not very fussy about realism and perfectionism.

Anyway, this wee painting made me happier than yesterday’s wee painting, although it’s fair to say I started painting in a better mood.

Til the morn,

Suzanne
