
The other day I made three self-portraits on thin cartridge paper with the intention of playing with and disrupting them. It wasn’t difficult to get into that mode with those drawings at all.
I painted this self portrait using the same reference photo, and the idea was to try the same thing but with a painting instead of a drawing. I am fascinated with the resistance I am having to this. It’s a completely different scenario to the loose drawings.
As you can see, I haven’t disrupted it very much at all. There was a lot of standing and staring and, frankly, overthinking. I’m not bothered by this, I’m interested in what’s going on, and why one is easy to disrupt and another isn’t.
I do like the smear of read across the eyes, and the level of glazing I achieved with that. Glazing is something that’s on my list of things to experiment with, so this was a good development.
This isn’t about making a finished piece, it’s about play.
