Paint Through It

This sketchbook page is all about practising looking, seeing and translating the shapes and values on the page. It’s about working with a limited palette to help me decide whether I want to use it on a canvas. It’s about being loose with an untidy brush. It’s about trying out a pose to see if it fits with an idea.

I saw someone post on the socials saying “I don’t know anything about art, but I know what I like.” and my opinion is that she knows everything she needs to know about art.

One of my pieces is in a competition, and I find myself observing the way I am attached to the outcome, and the thing is I really like the piece, it doesn’t matter if no-one else does. I’m human, the putting myself/my art out there in that way is loaded with opportunities for denting what little confidence I have, and creating roadblocks.

I’ve been riding this rollercoaster for 657 days, and my art has changed, but the only thing that’s changed with the critic mind-games is the cycles are shorter 😀

Til the morn,

Suzanne

What a pose that is! It took me a couple of looks to see it, to be honest. That’s a challenge way beyond anything I’d ever think to take on. Whack that old inner critic on the head and send it off with a boot in the arse. Since you began this journey your art has blossomed and there’s rarely been a page or canvas that you’ve shared that hasn’t made me go “Wow, this is so good. She’s really got this”. You’re an amazing woman who creates incredible art! Love you ✨✨✨💖

Thank you 💞 I don’t think the critic goes away, I think that’s part of the dance 😄 💜

True, that critic will always return, but you can kick it out when it starts to take up too much room in your head! It’ll slink back in, but it’ll take just that much longer before it starts up again.
