Reverse Process

I painted a lot today, and I was unthrilled with a number of pieces that are either going through an ugly stage, or being designated a hot mess. Some days are like that, and there’s a lot going on in the world that’s difficult to accept, so I’m fine with just painting shite, as long as I’m painting.

I saved the blog from all of that at the last minute with a bit of a stab in the dark. Let us sing the praises of black gesso, a supply I love and don’t use often enough. This portrait is a black gesso ground and titanium white acrylic, and I am loving it.

It’s kind of the reverse process of the way I sketch, usually with caput mortuum paint, and my faithful shitty brushes. Instead of building the intensity of the dark values, here I built the intensity of the light values.

Til the morn,

Suzanne
