Drawing A Badger

I did not make art in my studio today. The shock. The horror. Instead we went along to Silverburn Park for a drawing class organised for Scottish Badger Week. We got there an hour early so we could find a quiet spot and do some field sketching, which you will probably know I really need to get out and do more.

The session was hosted by artist and illustrator Joanna Scott in conjunction with Scottish Badgers, who supplied the subject for our session. Elspeth Stirling from Scottish Badgers gave a wee talk about badgers, and we all had some interesting bleathering about badgers, wildlife and conservation.

Our subject was Elphin, a small taxidermied female badger who was sadly found on a Fife road. Although passed, she was found to have milk, and so a search took place to try and locate the sett. Eventually they were able to rescue one tiny cub, and the SSPCA were able to raise and rehabilitate it with other orphans. The second cub was never found.

Elspeth had also brought a real badger skull, and a 3D printed skull, both very interesting to me. Also interesting was the way I just did not connect with the 3D printed skull at all when I tried to draw it.

It’s a long time since I have drawn in a group setting, and it was a lovely experience, and I managed not to all and greet a lot at the story of Elphin, although there were some moments, because that’s me.

I love these notes of a lovely artist’s date.

Til the morn.
