Word of the Year

I can’t remember if I wrote about it here, or not, but I had been pondering my 2025 Word of the Year, and I came up with the phrase Take Up Space. I let that compost for a while to see if something else came up, or a different way of framing it arrived, but Take Up Space just settled in and felt more and more right, so there it is.

Last year I chose Practise, and that worked so well for me, and I am going to keep that in the toolkit for this year. It also fits quite nicely with the reminder to Take Up Space, to not shrink myself.

In the studio I played with one of the large sheets of paper, just playing with colours, and drips, and having fun on a large space. I was having one of those days where I could not think on anything I wanted to draw or paint, which is funny because I was also taking some macro photos of Himself’s eyes with a view to painting them, but I just wasn’t in the mood.

I got my pair of 5×7″ plates out and set them up, and then played with just one stencil and a couple of colours. I chose a stencil that has squares on it, mostly because it’s not one I would usually be drawn to, but I wanted to try something different. I chose turquoise and red oxide paint to play with, and later added in green gold.

I very quickly decided this stencil is now a firm favourite after the first pull. I really like the effect. I also enjoyed practising using the two plates in tandem, that’s a lot of fun, and the second plate takes the excess paint from the roller, which is just perfect.

Til the morn,

Take Up Space,

Suzanne
