I have been busy in my studio today doing lots of different fun things, and one of the fun things I got up to was recycling some pages from an old journal to turn them into collage fodder. I checked the pages first to see if there were any amazing insights, or delicious memories, but I’m afraid they were just the anticipated brain drain of Morning Pages combined with overwhelming To Dos.
To reuse/recycle/upcycle them I took one of my newly acquired punch cutter tools, and punched out lots of stars. The leftover paper will make good collage fodder too, so I saved that. I then took out my junk journal, which is made of junk mail, so is an actual junk journal, rather than one of those gorgeous objects bound from antique (or fake antique) ephemera.
Mine is junk, and it makes for a great book for smearing excess paint, or trying things out, like collaging paper stars recycled from and old morning pages journal.

I used gel medium to collage the stars, and once they were dry I used some of the watered down acrylic ink in payne’s grey in a thin layer to create more of a varied look. I will probably leave the page like this, a note to myself that this is a fun little idea to play with for mixed media.
Another thing I played with was the sponge brush and ink from yesterday, but I tried using a portrait photo as a reference. I wasn’t trying for a likeness, just using the image as a guide.

My sketchbook will take a beating, but it was starting to rebel at the amount of very wet ink I was throwing at it. I do like the looseness of the sponge brush, and the messiness, and of course the drips.
The sponge brush forces you to make marks in straight lines, which is a great way of getting over the idea you are drawing a face, and instead think about translating shapes.
Til the morn,
