Complex Angle

I’ve been working on this week’s Let’s Face It class today, and the reference is a deliciously challenging and complex angle. If you’ve been following along you’ll know that I’m a wee bit fond of complex poses, so I’m going with the artist’s choice of reference, but choosing my own colours.

Before getting into the piece for the class itself, I started out with a couple of warm-up sketches – the first using my sketch paint and scratchy brush, and then a second sketch in graphite, using a chunky 5mm lead retractable pencil. Once I was comfortable with the reference, I spent a little time choosing colours, and getting a light sketch onto the paper.

The demonstration is done with coloured pencils and a watercolour pencil, but I decided to play with watercolour paint instead, because I don’t pull them out often enough. I’m leaving in the drips, although that’s not part of the class.

That’s as far as I got because the watercolour needs to dry before I go in with the pencils, and there was also a live demo this afternoon as part of the warm-ups for Let’s Face It 2025.

Oh the class is a Peta Harvey class.

Til the morn,

Wow! No matter the medium, or how “finished” she is, you’ve got the facial proportions down like a pro in all 3 versions! I can’t wait to see her completed.

Thank you, I do like to try odd angles, it has really improved the way I *look* when I’m sketching.
