I was going to call this blog ‘ebb and flow’ but I can’t resist a pun.
A few days of semi-frustrating ebb with higher resistance seems to have shifted into a much more satisfying and productive flow. This is how it happens, as I keep learning throughout this daily challenge.
I started out with my new almost daily ritual of making a 5×7″ gel print for my mini sketchbook. I was playing around with an orange bag I saved from going in the landfill bin, and now I am obsessed with the prints.
I moved onto my A4 sketchbook, determined to knock out whatever resistance is there with this newish book. I got out the sludge gesso and covered the next spread, and immediately felt something shift. So it seems that the process I developed in my previous A4 book out of necessity has somehow lodged in my brain as a trigger switch. Well, at least I know now.
Having covered that spread in sludge gesso, I ended up on the previous spread, because yesterday’s face only took up half the spread, and the colours were calling me back.
I got my largest gel plate out and used the orange bags to create pattern on the whole plate, then transferred that onto the sketchbook. It’s yummy. I am going to eat all the oranges just for the bags, now.
I had also been sketching with graphite in my faces sketchbook, focusing on eyes, and really getting into all the nooks and crannies. Since I was using my own eyes as a reference, there were quite a few nooks and crannies to study.
I took the eye practise to the larger sketchbook page and sketched an eye in stabilo all, which is a go-to for eyes because I love the way it smudges and smokes. It blends nicely with the acrylics, too.

I used the same limited colour palette as yesterday, and had a lot of fun. A good painting day.
Til the morn,
