Three Hour Portrait

I have been watching old episodes of the Portrait Artist of the Year series, and marvelling at the artists who take part. I decided to see what it’s like to start and finish a portrait in four hours. Obviously I don’t have a live sitter, nor did I have people all around me, and conversations, and television cameras and crew, so in a sense I have a lot of advantages, but I gave it a go.

Now, it’s only as I am writing this blog that I realise I shorted myself. My challenge was four hours of painting with breaks, like they do on the programme, but I’m sat here counting my four forty-five minute sessions and realising I only did three hours. So me. So maths.

So I suppose I’ll have to try it again.

Anyway, I chose a still from one of the shows, and hung that by my easel, and used the timer on my phone, and started with a blank canvas, and this is what I have after three hours.

I had a lot of fun, and I definitely got out of my sketchbook comfort zone. I used pyrrole red, ultramarine, and azo yellow with black and white.
