Forgot How To Draw

I started a new sketchbook today, although there is one spread in there from June, but other than that it hasn’t been touched. It was interesting observing my thought process around a fresh, new book. It’s essentially the same book – an A4 casebound sketchbook. It’s another pretty inexpensive one, although the other one was bargain basement quality, and this one has somewhat nicer paper, so there’s nothing to be precious about – it’s a cheap workbook sketchbook.

Yet I stood there staring at the first page, which isn’t where the filled spread is, and felt Resistance. Ha. So of course I pulled out a complex figure pose and made a dug’s arse of it. It’s a pose I have worked with before, but it was not coming together. I suppose I have been practising portraits rather then figures recently.

I pulled out the A3 sketchbook that I obsessed over buying, did one drawing in, and then promptly forgot about it, and I sketched another complex pose. I am in two minds about whether I nailed it, but it was an improvement on the first attempt. I told myself that maybe A4 is too small for full figure poses, and then reminded myself I have a tiny sketchbook with full figure poses successfully rendered.

Then I decided that I want to gather some new reference photos to work with, spice things up a bit. I pondered the idea of finally trying Rick the Muse, then told myself I was scared of his beard. As soon as my wee brain blurted that out I decided it was time to gie ma heid a wobble and then I painted this…

Such drama over a slightly slightly different sketchbook, but it is now underway, and I am laughing at myself.

Til the morn,

Suzanne
