Caught in Motion

This week’s Let’s Face It class is by Juna Biagioni, and I just adore her. The objective of the lesson was creating a portrait of a figure in motion, and I decided to go my own way with the reference image, and use one I have sketched previously, because I thought the messy, energetic monoprinting might lend itself to the dynamic pose.

After yesterday’s test piece, I decided less is more in terms of colour, and went with an iridescent pastel for the monoprint, then Conté pencils for the drawing. I really love it.

My reference is an iconic photograph of Lil Buck by Jacob Sutton from 2011, and Jacob graciously granted me permission to use the photo as a reference.

Here’s a wee slideshow of all the drawings in order – the first is in my 3×5″ fineliner sketchbook, the pair of gesture drawings are in an A4 sketchbook, and the last two are 12×16″ on watercolour paper.
