The Practice Is All We Control

“Lost in all the noise around us is the proven truth about creativity: it’s the result of desire – the desire to find a new truth, solve an old problem, or serve someone else. Creativity is a choice, it’s not a bolt of lightning from somewhere else.

There’s a practice available to each of us – the practice of embracing the process of creation in service of better. The practice is not the means to the output, the practice is the output, because the practice is all we can control.” Seth Godin

Today’s photo from my practice is a four inch square canvas with some stencilling on it, because sometimes what I’m working on isn’t ready to be shared.

I’m also in a frenzy of prepping canvases just now, which takes up space and time, and is part of a Plan I have for my practise. White gesso is kinda boring, tho, so a little stencilled canvas using up paint is all there is.

I’m thinking about this Seth Godin quote as I’m prepping these canvases. I have a mantra in mind just now that I should paint canvases as if they are a page in a cheap sketchbook, because it’s too easy to get tight as soon as it’s a canvas in front of me, as if there’s a Sunday Best of painting, or something.

It’s also too easy to leave them stacked in their wrappers, which I’ve noticed makes them more likely to stay that way. Hence the unwrapping and gessoing and grounding, making them easier to grab and start painting.

I don’t want to live in a world where women get shot in the face for no reason, then men go on social media and ask AI machines to put the dead woman in a bikini. But that’s the world I live in, and painting isn’t going to change that, but it gives my mind some space from having to look at it all day.

“The practice is all we can control..”

Til the morn,
