Painting Feet But Different

I spent a bit of time rearranging my studio today, partly in response to what happened with this large A1 sheet of paper.

I had it flat on the floor to spread gesso, then some acrylic paint, and because I was a little tight for space, I had stepped on the page and got paint on my sock. Oops.

The sock went to the sink to be cleaned with Murphy’s Oil soap (top tip!), and then I promptly stood in another bit of paint with a toe.

I had no plan for this page, other than messy play on a larger sheet, and as I was dabbing the page with my painty toe I decided it might be fun to make footprints.

I very nearly went straight to just that, but thankfully caught myself and had a word, and decided I should have some sort of clean-up plan. It turned out to not be the most well thought-out plan, but it was better than what might have happened with no plan.

Top tip if you are standing in paint then walking on a paper substrate, don’t stop moving, or you might stick to the page. Ask me how I know.

After I got the paint off my feet, I decided the space to play needed extending. The beauty of trolleys on wheels is that it’s easy to change the layout, and there was a bit of jiggery pokery with a few other things, but the space feels much better.

I think it is also going to be better with the change in light as winter sets in.

When I put the page on the easel, I saw a face in the messy paint, so decided to go with that. It’s a fun practise, and a nice change from having a reference. I’m going to let this sheet be a kind of messy play sheet for a while, and see where it ends up.

Til the morn,

Suzanne
