Background Layers

I was hoping to get a bit more of this done today, but it was one of those days when there were deliveries due, and I just don’t settle until they are dealt with. This was made more frustrating because the second delivery made it to right outside my house, and I stood and watched him search for my parcel, and the wee map showed my parcel tracked to there, and then he drove away. Moments later I got a notification that my parcel is delayed. I can only assume it was still at the depot, but I could have done without the couple of hours of expecting it.

When I eventually knuckled down properly, I got stuck into fixing the face. This is so funny, considering it’s a selfie that’s the reference, because it becomes something other, detached, but also I find myself saying things like ‘is my chin really that long???’ It appears that it is.

Once I was relatively satisfied with the proportions I decided to get the background started, so I blocked that in, along with the hair and the top. I’m leaving the underpainting of the face until tomorrow, because I want to get that all done on the same day, and I’m taking my time with this painting. This feels like quite the luxury after fifty five daily one hour portraits.

I am really loving the muslin on the canvas because it is very satisfying scrubbing the paint into the texture.

Til the morn,

Suzanne
