Water-mixable Oil Paints Test

This is my first palette using the set of water-mixable oil paints I got the other day. I have seen mixed reactions to these paints, and I am currently sitting in the positive camp, although not necessarily for the same reasons as other folk.

They are similar to oils when they come out of the tube, and they mix in a similar way with a palette knife, but they do have a different feel. Once I had mixed a basic palette, I did a quick portrait in one of my bargain 50p canvas paper pads, and I chose one of my cheap shitty brushes. This was definitely all about play, not results, but I’m a little bit obsessed with the first experiment.

As you can see I pushed the water-mixable idea to see what would happen, and I got drips, and I love drips, and I don’t need reams of solvent to achieve it. I didn’t get into layering, and fatter application, I just played with the water amounts.

I think I’m going to enjoy these, but not because they are very like oils, more because they are, so far, doing different things. I am leaving the palette to sit out to see how that turns out, and I’m interested to see how the painting dries, and what happens next.

I love those drips, though.

Til the morn,

Suzanne
