This was an interesting exercise. The reference is in black and white, but it is quite overexposed, leaving not much in the way of value, and no colour clues, so I had quite a lot of room for interpretation.
The teeth were quite a challenge, because of the small size of the paper, but I figure if you can’t do it small, you won’t do it large. I think they came out fine, and I resisted the temptation to make them nice, tidy teeth.
Aside from sketching and painting, I’m in the process of an experiment. I have a bolt of fabric that I have probably owned since 1997. It’s a cotton drill fabric that I bought in a clearance sale with the intention of making myself a pair of cargo pants. Remember cargo pants? I think they came back again, but I was there the first time.
Anyway, I never made the trousers (can’t believe we ever called them pants! lol) and I never gave away the fabric. It has followed me around from here to the Kingdom, and now I’ve chopped off a length and I am going to see what it’s like to paint on. I’ve used fluid matt medium as the primer layer, and I’m in the middle of the gesso layers, and I might get going with it tomorrow.
Til the morn,
Suzanne
