
I spent a short age trying to choose a reference, but nothing was speaking to me, so I found some selfies I had taken a while back where I was messing with different expressions but hadn’t tried painting them.
The Morning Sketch looks nothing like the photo, but I was enjoying the interpretation so much I just carried on.
Sometimes getting a likeness is nice, but sometimes going beyond the reference is much more interesting.
I followed that with my one hour alla prima oil portrait, and I had the same approach – play, exaggerate, have fun.

I laughed a lot painting this, and I thinking laughing and painting is definitely good medicine. I highly recommend it.
