Good Habits

I am singing the praises of the twenty minute sketch habit today, it really has changed my days for the better. By giving me a set thing to do first thing, I don’t end up overthinking and procrastinating about what I’m going to create, I just get the sketch done and the rest of the day ends up being much more creative.

Because I’m also doing the 100 Day Project, I don’t even overthink what to sketch, I have started just sketching the reference for the mini painting. Then I try to quickly get stuck into the hour of all prima painting. After those two are done I am feeling so accomplished that the rest of the day just flows.

It’s so good.

I was questioning my life choices after today’s escapade into all prima, tho.

It’s so bad.

I got a lot out of it, but it’s definitely a practise study. I wasn’t going for finished work of art tho. I realised that I had kind of been setting myself up there but wanting every 100 Day Project piece to be a Finished Artwork, so today I peeled things back, and just went with a very limited palette, ignore trying for colouring, and focus on values, and getting the fat over lean layers to work.

I’m happy with the values, and I did get good layers with the face, but I wished that I had made the face larger, and focused on that, because I ran out of time to fix whatever is going on with the shoulder.

After that was over, I spent some time in my A4 workbook sketchbook, and filled the last six pages, so that’s another sketchbook filled.

Last project of the day was doing some more on the large canvas I started yesterday. I was dithering a bit, so I set a timer and that got me going. She’s coming along nicely.

I have been posting my 100 Day Project on Instagram/Facebook, and Bluesky, but there’s a boycott that includes Meta today, so I am honouring that. I really don’t like Instagram, but I am giving it a go with this project to see if anything good happens.

Another great day in the studio.

Til the morn,

Suzanne

    Thanks for the meta reminder.
The big canvas looks like it’s progressing well, and I love all the little portraits so far too 😊
