Nasally Challenged

This is a very challenging reference, and I feel I am going to have her on my table for a while, working away until I master the nose. The head tilt and the hair makes what’s happening around the nose and hidden eye very difficult to translate.

I started out with a twenty minute sketch, and stopped after five minutes and flipped to a new page. Under normal circumstances, I would include that in the blog, but I completely forgot about it until I was typing. I suppose that’s a good thing, rather than being traumatised because I did a bad drawing lol.

I tried again, and got a bit more connected to what I was looking at, but I was still scunnert wi the hair. I gave it another go with my trusty shitty brushes and sketching paint, but meh.

In the end I sucked a lemon and then tried it with the oil paints and the timer.

I am not amused.

That poor apple.

I mean I thought the apple was That Poor Apple because it was so poorly painted, but now it looks fabulous under wonky painting.

The exercise isn’t about perfection, or beautifully rendered portraits, tho – it’s about being fast and gestural and I am really enjoying getting into that with oils, because I tend to avoid them a lot, even though I really like them.

Til the morn,

Suzanne
