Like Not Like

Today sees the beginning of Art Every Day Month, and this will probably be the year that I can say Yes, I Did, because I’ve made daily art a priority, and I’m OK with that.

Something that I’m still learning to be OK with is the art that doesn’t work, even though my logical brain knows all the art is good because the bad art is just part of the process.

That doesn’t protect you from the frustration tho, lol.

So returned today to a Let’s Face It class that first dropped in April, and has been lurking undone on my To Do list ever since. It’s a beautiful class with Unyime Edet, and what he does with watercolour is just breathtaking.

What I do with watercolour can be breathtaking, but in a quite different, more choking sort of way.

But what is my word for the year? Yes, it’s PRACTISE, and what do I not do with watercolours? Uh Huh.

I’m literally using this blog to talk myself through being kind to myself before I press upload on today’s work.

The bottom right image is the first attempt at this technique that I tried at the time the class dropped, which I abandoned because I didn’t have a flat brush for one-stroke watercolour.

I acquired the brush, and some watercolour tubes, and then avoided finishing the class like the plague, other than doing another drawing of the reference.

Today’s half-done attempt is on the left. I had to leave it to dry, and then decided I probably won’t finish it. For the purpose of this blog, and being honest and authentic about my art process, I am putting it up anyway.

The positive I do have is that the values are pretty much where I want them to be (red pic), even if the whole one-stroke watercolour technique is a bit of a disaster.

I needed to do something more in my comfort zone, so I took a sketch I had done a while back, and used up some acrylic colours from the wet palette to paint the abstract face.

I do like a wonky face, it has to be said.

Til the morn,

Suzanne
