Yesterday I moved some things to my studio room from the wee room that I was using previously. It was the next stage in claiming my space as a studio.
Today I was painting, and kept finding myself in the wee room looking for A Thing, then remembering all the things are now in the studio room.
This could take a while.
In the spirit of tomorrow being Day 200 of my blogging streak, I was aiming to finish my current A4 sketchbook.
Today I worked on one page.
Tomorrow will be a big day in my sketchbook.
I did potter about with another project that has been on my to do list for ages – making a stay wet palette for acrylics.
I’ve had all the ingredients collected for ages, just needed to be procrastinating about something else before I got it set up.
Not finishing sketchbook = new stay wet palette = a good result.
I used a good sized shallow plastic box with a lid. The lid has two clips, which I think works better than a pull-off lid, because I don’t want to be jiggling paint around too much, especially if I’m using fluid acrylics, if I’m trying to open a stuck lid. My box has a fairly flat bottom.
So, box: flat bum, clippy lid, nae too deep, and Robert is your father’s brother 🙂
For the stay-wet part I used a Sphonge that I had bought for something else but it didn’t work out. I think any cloth or sponge would do. The sphonge cloth thing is very absorbent, so holds water, and it’s nice and flat. Paper towels would probably work too.
On top of that is a layer of baking paper, or parchment paper, depending where you are. Baking paper is a really useful thing to have in your stash, but if you are like me, you won’t be able to find it no matter what room you are wandering in, so pinch the roll from the kitchen, and claim innocence later.
To set up – cut sponge or cloth to size and put in tub, wet sponge, place layer of baking paper on top of sponge, squirt on paint, make a masterpiece.

Once you are done with the palette, you can use the painty baking paper for collage, and replace with a fresh piece. I saw one artist who had a stack of these palettes for different projects, and that just looked lush to me.
Also worth noting – the sponge needs a wash and refresh every so often, or it will get stinky.
I did some colour mixing, and I have now closed up the box and will see how it fairs in the morning. Fingers crossed.
Til the morn,
Suzanne
