Finding the Switch

One of those days where I procrastinated all day about painting, and thinking I was on the verge of breaking my streak…

I pulled out my Seawhite sketchbook and did some mark-making across random pages. It’s starting to feel lived-in, and a couple of spreads are starting to look like interesting backgrounds.

After that I gessoed over something I did in my larger sketchbook yesterday. I don’t often do that, but sometimes it’s how I feel. The page gets to serve another purpose on another day.

All of this got the flow started, and I decided to start a canvas. This involved choosing a reference photo from Unsplash, and then toning my canvas. Of course I started so late in the day that the toned ground needs to dry, so it’s just a brown rectangle.

I made up too much of the burnt umber, so I got into my sketchbook again and grabbed one of this shitty brushes I have fallen for, and did a very quick sketch of the reference. It hasn’t captured the likeness, but it’s the first round of looking and seeing the shapes I need for the painting.

I got there in the end 🙂

Til the morn,

Suzanne
