100 Day Project Day 91

These drawings are both from the same reference, and it’s interesting the way they differ from each other. The first is small, in my A5 sketchbook, drawn using an HB mechanical pencil. The reference photo was in colour on my PC monitor, and quite small.

The second drawing is on a 1⁄4 sheet of 200lb watercolour paper, approximately 11×15″, and I had a printed greyscale version of the reference right by the drawing board. For the drawing I used Polychromos pencils in two blue shades.

The first drawing was sketchbook practise, and familiarising myself with the face, finding all the moments that aren’t initially obvious. The second drawing is an under drawing that I will finish tomorrow in either inks or watercolours.

I’m not sure if I will alter the eye on the blue drawing or not. It is the more accurate study of the eye, although the shadows aren’t finished yet, but looking at them together, I like the eye and the energy of the first drawing.

I am definitely feeling a vast improvement in my observational drawing since the start of this deep-dive into portaiture, and I enjoy the process much more these days.

Not bad for someone who was told she shouldn’t do art.

Til the morn,

Suzanne
