Two Colour Limit

100 Day Project Day 56

What happens if I make a colour palette using only two colours plus black and white?

I started by selecting one colour, and I set myself up for some fun with fluorescent magenta, because why not? I decided to go with a green so I was in complimentary colour territory, and chose phthalo green. Squodge some lamp black and titanium white onto the palette alongside them, and Robert is your father’s brother.

I did not spend a long time colour mixing, and because I was using a small palette I didn’t go nearly as far as I might have with tints, tones and shades, but I mixed a lovely set of colours for future reference.

I used one of my 6×8″ watercolour blocks to test the colours and clean my palette knife, then once I had a small range of colours, I used gesso to push back the first layer, before scratching in a rough face with an inktense pencil. With the basic face down, I played around with my colour mixes and painted in the face.

This is definitely the spirit of the 100 mini paintings project I have been adding to over time. It’s not necessarily a colour mix I am in love with, although it might feel different tomorrow, but there are some colours I really like. I definitely want to come back and do a more comprehensive set of tints and shades, and push this a bit further.

Til the morn,

Suzanne

Interesting! ….and it got me thinking about Anders Zorn and his famous palette of Titanium White, Ivory Black, Cad Red and Yellow Ochre and the insane number of skin tones you can get out of THAT!

Wow this post feels like so long ago! If you like a Zorn palette, I have a few posts tagged here there might be more, since I am sometimes lax with the tags. It’s great fun to use, and I sometimes switch to vermillion for the red. Thanks for commenting 🙂
