100 Day Project Day 44
I finished my latest response to a Let’s Face It class today. I really enjoyed the process, even if I’m picking holes in the end result. There’s a lot wrong with the proportions of the face, but I didn’t really look properly until I was too far in with the painting, so I decided to just let it be what it is.
I was focusing mainly on mixing the skin tones with this one, which was interesting because the reference was a black and white photo, so it was a real challenge, and I’m pretty happy with what I came up with.
The limited palette I used comprised yellow ochre, alizarin crimson, ultramarine, burnt sienna, buff titanium and black and white. I don’t think I actually used the white, white I am giving myself extra marks for.
The last stage of the portrait involved coloured pencils over a layer of clear gesso, and I enjoyed that, especially for bringing out the eyes a little more.
I could change a hundred things about it, but I’m not aiming for perfection, and these class pieces are learning episodes rather than great moments of self-expression episodes.
This is Week 11 of the course, and Week 14 just dropped, so I have this wild idea that I will catch up this week, and I doubt that’s going to happen.

Til the morn,
Suzanne
