Landscape Sketch

100 Day Project Day 22

A driech day, but perfect for a wander with the lodger lurcher, and driech means less bams. We wandered the edge of the field, and I took some photos for references later.

Our lodger, however, was much more interested in sniffs, especially sniffs outwith his usual repertoire. He’s an older gentleman, but still gets quite activated, especially when he comes across little trails in the rough grass that lead to a series of muckle holes.

He had a good sniff, and I suspect he was probably hearing things we couldn’t, but the wise badgers were sleeping and as the weather was turning, we were starting to feel fair jeelit, and it was getting a bit greetie.

Once home, I decided to break in my new sketchbook, which I am now so glad I bought, despite my self-imposed ban. It’s lovely, but I have to be careful and get paint into a nice sketchbook before it becomes a too-coveted thing, and I overthink it.

The sketchbook is the Stillman & Birn Zeta softcover 8×10, and I love it already. The landscape sketch using my own photo as reference was painted in acrylics with a cheap flat brush.

This was a fun exercise that covered a lot of bases. I don’t do much landscape painting or drawing, and I’m not really sure why. There’s a nice little bit of perspective stuff going on here, and I painted using only the primaries and black and white.

I chose my set of primaries that are actually the cooler ones, process cyan, process yellow, and process magenta, and I think that worked because it is a cold, grey day out there.

The badger sett is in this painting, unseen and secret.

Thinking of the women in Palestine on the Mothering Sunday.

Til the morn,

Suzanne
