My favourite quote ~ Maya Angelou

365 Days of blog prompts ~ “Quote me ~ Do you have a favourite quote that you return to again and again? What is it, and why does it move you?”

“I decided many years ago to invent myself. I had obviously been invented by someone else - by a whole society - and I didn’t like their invention.” Maya Angelou

“I decided many years ago to invent myself. I had obviously been invented by someone else – by a whole society – and I didn’t like their invention.” Maya Angelou

This is my favourite quote. The idea that of course we have permission to invent ourselves, and reinvent ourselves, and cast off the conditioning instilled in us from childhood, is potent. I don’t see inventing myself as a singular event, I see it as a lifelong process. I am always questioning what I believe, whether it is about myself, or the world around me. I find hooks weighted with other people’s crap, or society’s crap, sneakily embedded in a shady corner of my psyche. I appear to be a magnet for people with an agenda to reform me, although I’ve managed to stay crazymaker free for the past two years – but these encounters leave their mark, and it takes time to unpack. Then another period of inventing myself ensues.

I am going through that right now, hence this blog.
